- Violence in South Sudan as the Country Celebrates Its Five-Year Anniversary
- On July 7, 2016, fighting breaks out between two rival groups in Juba, South Sudan as the country celebrates its five-year anniversary. One group supports President Salva Kiir while the other supports rival Vice President Riek Machar. Over 150 people are assumed dead with possibility of more casualties to come. The U.S. and India pull their non-emergency workers out of Juba, and the Red Cross halts all operations in South Sudan. On Monday, July 11, President Salva Kiir demands an immediate ceasefire, hoping to stop the violence and avoid a civil war.
