A 7.8-magnitude earthquake rocked Chacras, Ecuador on April 16, 2016, causing widespread damage. The strongest earthquake to hit Ecuador in decades flattened buildings and buckled highways along the country's Pacific coast. One week later, the death toll had reached nearly 650, with more than 10,000 injured.
