- On August 9, 2016, Michael Phelps wins his 20th gold medal of his career in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic games. Phelps came out of retirement for these Games. Four years ago at the London Olympics, he won silver in that race. Phelps finishes four hundredths of a second in front of Japan's. The superstar swimmer adds gold medal number 21 for a relay on the same night—he ends Olympics 2016 with 23 golds and 28 career total medals.
