- First Zika-Related Death Is in Texas
- The first death related to the Zika Virus occurs on August 8, 2016, in Texas. A newborn girl is born with birth defects, including microcephaly—a hallmark of Zika—passes away minutes after the birth. The mother had travelled to Latin America during her pregancy; health officials stress that this virus was not contracted in Texas—local mosquitoes are currently free of Zika.
