On Thursday June 30, 2016, Defense Secretary Ash Carter announces at a news conference that transgender individuals will now be allowed to serve openly in the military. He announces that the new policy will begin on October 1, 2016. Transgenders already serving in the military will be able to come out, and also receive proper medical care. Within the next year, transgendered people will be able to enlist in the military as long as they have been living as their new gender for over a year.
