James GORDON, Congress, NY (1739-1810)

GORDON James , a Representative from New York; born in the parish of Killead, County Antrim, Ireland, October 31, 1739; attended the local schools; immigrated to the United States in 1758; settled in Schenectady, N.Y., where he engaged in Indian trading; served as a lieutenant colonel in the Militia Regiment of Albany County, N.Y., during the Revolutionary War; captured and taken prisoner to Canada; returned to Albany, N.Y.; member of the State assembly 1777-1780, 1786, and 1790; moved to Ballston Spa, N.Y.; elected as a Pro-Administration candidate to the Second and Third Congresses (March 4, 1791-March 3, 1795); member of the board of trustees of Union College, Schenectady, N.Y., 1795-1809; served in the State senate 1797-1804; died in Ballston Spa, N.Y., January 17, 1810; interment in Briggs Cemetery.
