George Baxter UPHAM, Congress, NH (1768-1848)

UPHAM George Baxter , a Representative from New Hampshire; born in Brookfield, Mass., December 27, 1768; attended the common schools and Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, N.H.; was graduated from Harvard University in 1789; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1792 and commenced practice in Claremont, N.H.; solicitor for Cheshire County 1796-1804; elected as a Federalist to the Seventh Congress (March 4, 1801-March 3, 1803); declined to be a candidate for reelection to the Eighth Congress; member of the State house of representatives 1804-1813 and again in 1815, serving as speaker of the house in 1809 and 1815; served in the State senate in 1814; resumed the practice of law and also interested in banking; died in Claremont, N.H., on February 10, 1848; interment in Pleasant Street Cemetery.
