Tell us about your work---what do you do? I assist the attorneys in our office with their duties which include revising and maintaining customer contracts, human resources, securities and exchange filings and bankruptcy matters. What skills are needed? You need to have good people skills because you will interact with many personality styles that may includes international customers and co-workers. You need to be computer literate, in word processing, databases and the Internet. You need to have good organization skills and be able to multi-task , work under pressure, problem solve , work with confidential matters , and produce a good product. What was your major? Advertising How did you get started in your career? I worked in a small law firm for eight years, that honed my skills as an administrative assistant and also gave me a background in law. Now I have taken those skills to a different setting and am using what I have learned and also getting the chance to learn new office skills and work in different areas of the law. What experience do you need in this job? Basically you need to be computer literate, and willing to learn as you go. Basic office skills are necessary . No background in law would be necessary though . Describe your "typical" workday: My day typically involves the following activities: drafting, typing, faxing and/or mailing correspondence ; creating files and filing incoming documents ; following up on on-going projects by phone, e-mail or written correspondence; maintaining the attorneys' calendars ; and responding to e-mail requests for information, documents or meetings. What is the hardest aspect of your job? When there is a lack of communication between co-workers and it leads to unfair/unclear expectations. What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? Being able to help someone out-a boss, a co-worker, a client or customer and having them remember your name and know that they can rely on you. What are your suggestions for someone considering this field? Be flexible, be willing to learn as you go. You never enter a job knowing everything you will need to know. Keep an open mind. It is a great position to be in to get to know the field, the company and to then move around in the company.
