Phineas JONES, Congress, NJ (1819-1884)

JONES Phineas , a Representative from New Jersey; born in Spencer, Worcester County, Mass., April 18, 1819; attended the common schools; moved to Elizabeth (then called Elizabethtown), N.J., in 1855; member of the city council of Elizabeth 1856-1860; moved to Newark in 1860; engaged in manufacturing and mercantile pursuits; vice president of the New Jersey State Agricultural Society; member of the State house of assembly in 1873 and 1874; elected as a Republican to the Forty-seventh Congress (March 4, 1881-March 3, 1883); declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1882; retired from active life and died in Newark, N.J., April 19, 1884; interment in Evergreen Cemetery, Elizabeth, N.J.
