doctor, was rescued from a research station in the South Pole in April after he developed a potentially life-threatening case of pancreatitis. The pilots of the twin-engine propeller plane that rescued Shemenski battled snow, minus 65-degree temperatures, and complete darkness to evacuate the physician. It was the second rescue mission to the South Pole Station in a year-and-a-half; Dr. Jerri Nielsen was rescued in October 1999 after she discovered a cancerous tumor in her breast.
