The cartoon was watchable. Animated Inspector Gadget fit in with the bumbling detectives of film and upped the ante with a goofy panoply of gizmos and doohickeys popping out of his bionic body. But the movie picks up this premise and fumbles it.

Matthew Broderick plays Mr. Gadget with a melange of innocence and mischief. Children will likely be impressed by Gadget spewing hundreds of gallons of toothpaste when he chooses the wrong function in a training session. His archenemy is Sanford Scolex, hammed up by Rupert Everett in the movie's best performance.

The massive Disney budget doesn't prevent this film from falling flat. It drags on as long as Gadget's go-go Gadget arms. The one genuinely funny scene involving a “Minion Recovery Group” with cameos by Mr.T and James Bond's Jaws is just as funny to read about in a review.
