Tell us about your work---what do you do? I am a MIS manager with approximately 20 people reporting to me. I am responsible for developing a partnership with our business clients , controlling recurring and opportunity costs in order to complete projects on schedule, balancing scope and change management, providing functional and administrative leadership , preparing unit salary plans and departmental budgets , and participating in strategic planning . What skills are needed? Planning , organizing , controlling , leadership, deputy development , decisiveness, business proficiency, initiative, creativity , impact, vision, flexibility , organizational sensitivity, personal sensitivity, oral communication , written communication, analytical abilities & technical skills. What was your major? Computer Science (Scientific Applications) & Mathematics How did you get started in your career? I took a job right out of college working as a Systems Engineer at a paper mill. I have worked my way through various positions to get where I am now. What experience do you need in this job? Bachelor's degree with 12 years of relevant experience or an advanced degree with 10 years of relevant experience with demonstrated skills mentioned above. Describe your "typical" workday: I spend time going through project plans, meeting with clients and team members, and resolving the hottest issue of the moment. I wouldn't say my days are very typical. It varies depending on what is needed at the time. For example, sometimes I will have to do budgets, salary plans, reviews, etc. Other times, I will be dealing with project issues or planning of a project. What is the hardest aspect of your job? I am not allowed to get into the details as much as I would like. What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? Seeing a project that we worked on as a team be successful to the business. Working with the team. What are your suggestions for someone considering this field? Develop your technical and analytical skills so that you can be knowledgeable to your team and your clients.
