Barrett, Amy Coney, 1972–, associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (2020–), b. New Orleans, grad. Univ. of Notre Dame Law School (1997). She clerked for Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, and after a period in private practice, taught law at her alma mater from 2002. Regarded as a reliable conservative in the mold of Scalia, she was appointed (2017) by President Donald Trump to the U.S. Court of Appeals, Seventh Circuit, and then (2020) to the Supreme Court. Her appointment to the Supreme Court, to the seat held by the late liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, gave the court a solid conservative majority.
