Hoshea
Hoshea hōshē´ə [key]. 1 See Joshua. 2 Died after 722 BC, last king of Israel (c.730–722 BC). He succeeded Pekah, whom he murdered. He was a tributary of Assyria but made the fatal mistake of aligning himself with Egypt against his Assyrian overlord, who overran (c.728 BC) Israel and, after a long siege, took (722 BC) Samaria. This was the end of the northern kingdom. 2 Kings 15.30; 17. 3 Hebrew name for the prophet Hosea.
