Statesville, city (1990 pop. 17,567), seat of Iredell co., W central N.C., on a plateau in the Blue Ridge foothills founded 1789, inc. 1847. It is a commercial and industrial center in an agricultural area that raises tobacco, grain, soybeans, chicken, and cattle. Other products include transportation equipment machinery furniture hot air balloons flour feeds textiles and apparel lumber paper wood, plastic, metal, and glass products mobile homes and consumer goods. Nearby is the site of Fort Dobbs (1755).
