Rustavi ro͝ostäˈvē [key], city (1989 pop. 153,661), E Georgia, on the Kura River. It was an industrial center, with ironworks and steelworks and chemical plants, but the local economy collapsed in the 1990s and has recovered slowly. The city, developed after 1948, is near the site of the ancient town of Rustavi, which was destroyed c.1400 by Timur.
