Steyn, Martinus Theunis

Steyn, Martinus Theunis märtēˈnəs töˈnĭs stīn [key], 1857–1916, last president (1896–1900) of the Orange Free State (see Free State), educated in the Netherlands and in England. He was admitted to the bar in 1882 and served as a judge. As president he made an alliance with the Transvaal. He led troops against British forces in the South African War, and he participated in the peace conference.
