Gattinara, Mercurino Arborio, marchese di mĕrco͞orē´nō ärbô´rēō märkĕ´za dē gät˝tēnä´rä [key], 1465–1530, Italian statesman and jurist, cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. After a distinguished legal career in his native Piedmont, he served Margaret of Austria as counselor. In 1518 he was made chancellor by the king of Spain, later Holy Roman Emperor Charles V . A humanist and a scholar, Gattinara had much influence upon Charles, whom he urged to create a dynastic empire. Gattinara was made a cardinal in 1529.
