Simon, Antoine
Simon, Antoine äNtwän´ sēmôN´ [key], 1736–94, French revolutionary, often called
the shoemaker,a member of the Commune of Paris. He and his wife guarded the dauphin, Louis XVII, in prison. Their reputed brutality and coarseness made them infamous. A friend of Maximilien Robespierre and Jean Paul Marat, Simon was executed after the coup of 9 Thermidor.
