Buttigieg, Pete

Buttigieg, Pete (Peter Paul Montgomery Buttigieg) bo͞otˈəjĕj [key], 1982–, American politician, b. South Bend, Ind. Buttigieg was a consultant at the management firm McKinsey (2007–10) and an intelligence officer in the naval reserve (2009–17), serving (2014) in Afghanistan. A Democrat, he served as mayor of South Bend (2012–20) before becoming a candidate for president of the United States in 2019. The first openly gay major presidential candidate, he ran well in the first contests but then fell behind and left the race. In 2021, he became the transportation secretary in the Biden administration.
