Khalifa ibn Zaid Al Nahayan

Khalifa ibn Zaid Al Nahayan, 1948–, Emirati ruler. The son of Sheikh Zaid ibn Sultan Al Nahayan of Abu Dhabi, he was named crown prince and chairman of Abu Dhabi's defense department in 1969 and its prime minister and minister of defense and finance in 1971. In 1974 he became deputy prime minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and in 1976 deputy supreme commander of the UAE's armed forces. Following the death of his father in 2004, he succeeded him as ruler of Abu Dhabi and president of the UAE.
