Gwilt, Joseph

Gwilt, Joseph gwĭlt [key], 1784–1863, British architect, archaeologist, and writer, known chiefly for his Encyclopaedia of Architecture, Historical, Theoretical, and Practical (8 vol., 1842). Among his other books are Sciography; or, Examples of Shades and Shadows, with Rules for Their Projection (1822); an edition of Sir William Chambers's Treatise on the Decorative Part of Civil Architecture, with annotations (1825); a translation of Vitruvius (1826); and Elements of Architectural Criticism (1837).
