Earthquake in India
India was hit by a 5.5 magnitude earthquake on January 7. No injuries or damages have been reported. (Reuters)

18 Deaths in Bomb Cyclone
Since the new year, the northeast has experienced below freezing temperatures and multiple blizzards. Many areas of the northeast were brought to a standstill due to the weather, and at least 18 people are suspected to have died from the storms, as reported on January 8. (Reuters)

2017 Disasters Cost U.S. A Record Amount of Money
On January 8, it was reported that the combined cost of all weather disasters in 2017 reached $306 billion. This is a new record for the U.S. (Reuters)

Cyclone in Madagascar
On January 8, Madagascar was hit by a cyclone that killed 29 people. Thousands of others have been displaced by the cyclone. (Reuters)

Mudslides in California
After facing months of wildfires, California was hit by heavy rains, creating deadly mudslides. On January 9, it was announced that the mudslides had killed at least 13 people and destroyed six houses entirely. Luckily, thousands of people were evacuated the day before, as officials predicted mudslides due to the damages of the wildfires. (CNN)

Another Earthquake Hits Iran
A magnitude 4.7 earthquake hit Iran on January 10. As of today, no casualties or damages have been reported. (Reuters)

Thomas Fire 100% Contained
California’s largest fire in modern history, Thomas Fire, was labeled as 100% contained on January 12. The fire started on December 4, and burned over 1,000 structures throughout the month. (CNN)

More Dead in California Mudslide
On January 11, it was announced that another 4 had died in the mudslide, causing the death toll to rise to 17. The number of missing people has also risen to be 17 as of this date. (Reuters)

On January 16, it was reported that hundreds of flights had been cancelled due to the second winter storm of the year. (Reuters)

Storm Kills Six
Powerful winds on January 18 left three dead in the Netherlands and three more dead in Germany. The winds wreaked havoc on the land, and caused the cancellation of hundreds of flights. (Reuters)

California Mudslide Death Toll Rises to 21
A missing California woman’s body was found on January 20, bringing the death toll of the deadly mudslides to 21. Two people remain missing, as Faviola Benitez Calderon was one of the three unaccounted for. (CNN)

Tsunami Warnings Cancelled After Earthquake
After a 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit the coast of Alaska, the tsunami warning was cancelled. Though the warning is no longer in effect, officials are warning residents to steer clear of the coastline. (CNN)

FEMA to End Shipments to Puerto Rico
Four months after Hurricane Maria, FEMA announced on January 31 that it would end its food and water shipments to Puerto Rico. The Puerto Rican government is currently trying to reverse this decision. (CNN)

Earthquake in Pakistan
On January 31, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck northeast Afghanistan; however, the ten injuries were reported in neighboring Pakistan. One child in Pakistan also died from the quake. (Reuters)
