In 2005, Foreign Policy and Britain's Prospect magazine selected what they considered to be the top 100 public intellectuals. The list is meant to indicate an individual's public influence, not intrinsic achievement. Readers were then invited to rank the selections—more than 20,000 participated. For more about the methodology read The Prospect/FP Top 100 Public Intellectuals.
