Writers:David Dean Bottrell and Jessie Jones
Fox; PG; 92 minutes
Cast:Whoopi Goldberg, LL Cool James, Jada Pinkett Smith

Whoopi Goldberg demonstrates her considerable talent at the helm of Kingdom Come, a waterlogged ship. The movie is a soap-opera drama with a bathroom humor heart. And it's about a funeral.

Goldberg, LL Cool J, and Jada Pinkett Smith are among the variously damaged members of the Slocumb family who reunite for last good-byes to the meanspirited patriarch. The first two number among the more compelling characters, the latter among the more histrionic.

If Kingdom Come were more sober it would be easier to respect. Coarse humor steps in inappropriately. Death films are tricky business, and in being neither a flat-out comedy nor heavy reflection, the movie loses force. The family gathering is a played-out form to which Kingdom Come brings no revelations.
