Whenever helicopter chases, fast-food culture, and small-town romance are glazed with a comedic veneer and consumed in one sitting, someone's stomach is liable to get upset. Dorian (Wilson) and his brother Angus (Busey) scare their adulterous stepfather to death by chasing him in a helicopter at the behest of their jealous mama (O'Hara). When Dorian takes a job at the local fast-food joint to investigate folks who may be witnesses against him and his brother in the pending murder trial, he meets and falls for co-worker Sally… the mother of his stepfather's unborn son. The movie does well to revolve around sweet and unassuming Sally, seamlessly played by Barrymore. The brothers' shared Oedipal urges transform into a sibling rivalry with cherubic Sally at the center of the storm. The developing relationship between her and Dorian (sweethearts in real-life) sustains the movie but does little to pull Home Fries off the back-burner of pop-Americana.
