Timothy Hutton's directorial debut emerges as a manipulative, predictable tale about two lonely outsiders who find soul mates in each other. Kevin Bacon plays Ricky, a 30 year old with cerebral palsy who's being forced into a group home by his ailing mother. He befriends a young girl, Harriet (Wood), while staying in her family's ramshackle motel. Harriet wants out of her abusive family. They try to run away from their doomed futures, but their success in executing their far-fetched plans are about as likely as, well, digging to China.
