The fact that this album dominated holiday sales and hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts for several weeks in December of 2000, says a lot about The Beatles, but it also may say a lot about the current state of contemporary music.

Packing a single CD to the 79-minute max, this new compilation includes some of the greatest music ever made, in the form of 27 Beatles' singles that hit No. 1 in either the U.S. or the U.K.

Remastered but not remixed, 1 chronicles the Fabs' legacy from 1962's "Love Me Do'' through the 1970 farewell single "The Long and Winding Road.'' The album hits the vast majority of commercial high points in between, including "She Loves You,'' "I Want to Hold Your Hand,'' "Ticket to Ride,'' "Yesterday,'' "Penny Lane,'' and "Hey Jude.''

Impressive as that may be, there are some notable omissions from the album—particularly the absence of such essential Beatles' singles as "Please Please Me'' and "Strawberry Fields Forever,'' which apparently failed to meet the No. 1 criteria based on the particular charts used as a reference point in compiling the disc.

Nevertheless, this is a splendid starter set, designed for younger fans as well as moms and dads looking for a spellbinding look back at the wonder years.
