Palestinian leader, and Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister, brokered a reluctant peace agreement in Maryland with the help of President Clinton and King Hussein of Jordan. The October talks seemed to be stagnating early on and were in danger of closing without an agreement after a Palestinian terrorist injured 60 by bombing an Israeli bus station on the fifth day of the meeting. A compromise was ultimately hashed out. Israel agreed to withdraw from an additional 13% of the West Bank, while the Palestinians promised to remove anti-Israeli clauses in the Palestinian National Charter and to heighten their vigilance against terrorism.
