John Edwards LEONARD, Congress, LA (1845-1878)

LEONARD John Edwards , a Representative from Louisiana; born in Fairville, Chester County, Pa., September 22, 1845; attended the public schools; was graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, N.H., in 1863 and from Harvard University in 1867; studied law in Germany; returned to the United States and was admitted to the bar in Louisiana in 1870 and commenced practice at Monroe, Ouachita Parish; district attorney of the thirteenth judicial district of Louisiana in 1871 and 1872; elected associate justice of the State supreme court in 1876; resumed the practice of his profession in Monroe, La.; elected as a Republican to the Forty-fifth Congress and served from March 4, 1877, until his death in Havana, Cuba, March 15, 1878; interment in the Friends' (Hicksite) Cemetery of the Middletown Meeting House, Middletown Township, Delaware County, Pa.
