Henry SHAW, Congress, MA (1788-1857)

SHAW Henry , a Representative from Massachusetts; born near Putney, Windham County, Vt., in 1788; completed preparatory studies; studied law; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Albany, N.Y., in 1810; moved to Lanesboro, Mass., in 1813; elected as a Republican to the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Congresses (March 4, 1817-March 3, 1821); unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1820; member of the State house of representatives 1824-1830 and 1833; served in the State senate in 1835; unsuccessful candidate for Governor of Massachusetts in 1845; moved to New York City in 1848; member of the Board of Education of New York City in 1849; member of the New York City Common Council 1850-1851; member of the New York State Assembly in 1853; moved to Newburgh, N.Y., in 1854; died in Peekskill, Westchester County, N.Y., October 17, 1857; interment in the Lower Cemetery, Lanesboro, Mass.
