Henry Justin ALLEN, Congress, KS (1868-1950)

ALLEN Henry Justin , a Senator from Kansas; born in Pittsfield, Warren County, Pa., September 11, 1868; moved with his parents to Kansas in 1870 and settled on a farm near Clifton, Clay County; attended the public schools, Washburn College, Topeka, Kans., and graduated from Baker University, Baldwin, Kans., in 1890; became a newspaper reporter and editorial writer; during the Spanish-American War served as a war correspondent in Cuba; member of the press galleries of the United States Congress 1914-1916; owner of several Kansas newspapers; served with the American Red Cross in France as head of the home communication service during the First World War; Governor of Kansas 1919-1923; special commissioner of the Near East Relief to Armenia, Turkey, Greece, and Southern Russia in 1923 and 1924; director of publicity for the Republican National Committee in the campaign of 1928; appointed on April 1, 1929, as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Charles Curtis and served from April 1, 1929, to November 30, 1930, when a duly elected successor qualified; unsuccessful candidate for election to fill the vacancy; editor of the Topeka State Journal and chairman of the board of directors of the Wichita Beacon; died in Wichita, Kans., January 17, 1950; interment in Maple Grove Cemetery.
