Henry Harrison MARKHAM, Congress, CA (1840-1923)

MARKHAM Henry Harrison , a Representative from California; born in Wilmington, Essex County, N.Y., November 16, 1840; attended the common schools of his home town and Wheeler's Academy, Vermont; moved to Wisconsin in 1861; during the Civil War enlisted in the Union Army as a private in Company G, Thirty-second Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry; promoted to second lieutenant; returned to Wisconsin and settled in Milwaukee; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1867 and practiced in Milwaukee before the State and United States courts; moved to Pasadena, Los Angeles County, Calif., in 1879 and continued the practice of his profession; was also interested in gold and silver mining; elected as a Republican to the Forty-ninth Congress (March 4, 1885-March 3, 1887); declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1886; Governor of California 1891-1895; died in Pasadena, Calif., October 9, 1923; interment in Mountain View Cemetery.
