VICKERS George , a Senator from Maryland; born in Chestertown, Kent County, Md., November 19, 1801; pursued an academic course; employed in the county clerk's office for several years; studied law; admitted to the bar in 1832 and commenced practice in Chestertown, Md.; major general of the State militia in 1861; presidential elector on the Democratic ticket in 1864; vice president of the Union National Convention of Conservatives in Philadelphia in 1866; member, State senate 1866-1867; elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the action of the Senate in declining to permit Philip F. Thomas to qualify, and served from March 7, 1868, to March 3, 1873; resumed the practice of law in Chestertown, Md., and died there October 8, 1879; interment in Chester Cemetery.
