Polk; delegate, Democratic National Convention,1980 and 1984; member of the Louisiana State Democratic Financial Council; member of the Louisiana state central committee; member of the Louisiana Democratic leadership council; elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-ninth Congress by special election, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of her husband, United States Representative Gillis W. Long (March 30, 1985-January 3, 1987); was not a candidate for reelection to the One Hundredth Congress in 1986; died on November 23, 2019, in Chevy Chase, Md.
