Hugo Claus was a highly praised author from Belgium, who wrote more than 20 novels, 60 plays, and thousands of poems. He is best known for his novel “The Sorrow of Belgium,“ which he wrote in 1983. The work portrays the Nazi occupation of Belgium and his own experiences as a youth during that time. Claus published his first book of poems, “Short Series,“ when he was 18.
