Academy- and Tony Award-winning film and stage actress best known for her portrayal of Annie Sullivan, Helen Keller's teacher, in the stage (1960) and film (1962) versions of The Miracle Worker. Her other films include The Graduate (1967), The Turning Point (1977), The Elephant Man (1980), Torch Song Trilogy (1988), Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All (1994), Homecoming (1996), G.I. Jane (1997), Deep in My Heart (1999) and Keeping the Faith (2000). She was married to comedic actor and director Mel Brooks.
