FIFA Club World Championship

The 2001 FIFA Club World Championship that was scheduled to be held in Spain from July 28-August 12 was postponed by FIFA until 2003. The reasons for the postponement on May 18 (just two months before the 12-team tournament was to start) given by FIFA were as follows: the timing of the originally scheduled tournament was inconvenient from the perspective of national and international fixtures (national leagues and Champions League qualifiers are in progress), the economic crises affecting some of the countries made some teams less eager to participate and FIFA's marketing partner for the event, Traffic, was having severe financial problems which would have negatively affected its ability to market the tournament to sponsors and broadcasters.
