Sophia sōfī´ə, Ger. zōfē´ä [key], 1630–1714, electress of Hanover, consort of Elector Ernest Augustus. She was the daughter of Frederick the Winter King and Elizabeth of Bohemia, who was the daughter of James I of England. In 1701, Parliament settled on her and her issue the succession to the English throne (see Settlement, Act of ), and in 1714 her son, George I , became king of England. Sophia was noted for her wide intellectual interests.
