George Washington LAY, Congress, NY (1798-1860)

LAY George Washington , a Representative from New York; born in Catskill, N.Y., July 26, 1798; pursued classical studies and was graduated from Hamilton College at Clinton, N.Y., in 1817; studied law; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Batavia, N.Y., in 1820; treasurer of Genesee County, N.Y., 1825-1831; elected as an Anti-Masonic candidate to the Twenty-third Congress and reelected as an Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1833-March 3, 1837); member of the state assembly in 1840; Chargé d'Affaires to Sweden from May 12, 1842, to October 29, 1845; died in Batavia, Genesee County, N.Y., October 21, 1860; interment in Batavia Cemetery.
