What is the Best Thread Count for Sheets?

Updated July 17, 2020 | Jennifer Caffelle

When trying to settle on a new set of sheets to purchase the options can feel endless. There are many factors to keep in mind, thread count being high on the list. Below you will find many suggestions to keep in mind while determining what sheets will fit your personal style and comfort level best.

What is thread count?

Thread count, quite literally, means the number of threads woven together in a square inch. The best thread count can vary depending on which fabric type you decide on. Many assume that the higher the thread count, the softer the fabric, but that isn’t always the case. Most of the best rated sheets fall within a 300-500 thread count range. Natural fabric versus manmade fabrics can hold different textures and different levels of durability based on how many threads are woven together in each square inch.

Our Top Choices

What to consider when deciding on the best thread count for sheets:

  • Personal Comfort: Do you prefer soft and smooth (silk), cool crispness (cotton material), warm and soft (flannel), breathable and airy (linen) or another feeling?
  • Price Point: Name brand sheets are likely to have high standards for their products in order to assure that they stand up to continued use over time. Paying for quality once is better than having to replace sheets more frequently because they were initially inexpensive.
  • Design Style: If you are looking for a specific color or pattern, your fabric type may vary. If you don’t have a preference on color or pattern, more options will be available to you.

We at Infoplease have a stated mission to help people find accurate, reliable information. We usually fulfill that mission by offering reference data, or by presenting educational articles. One area where there's a lot of confusion and misinformation on the internet is consumer reviews. So, we've decided to offer some useful tips and some reliable data for consumers.

As always, we want to give you the information you need. We’ve considered the experiences of people who use drone cameras and existing reviews on top websites. But, we want to focus in on expert opinions and on the hard facts about each product.

Here are the best thread count sheets

500-Thread-Count Cotton Sateen King Sheets

Best Cotton Sheets

Cotton is typically the best material for sheets; they get softer over time, they wear well and are durable. As you go for a higher thread count, cotton has a softer feel while still maintaining that cooling quality. These sheets were featured in Oprah magazine's roundup of cotton sheets, and have a solid mid-range price point compared to other comparable sheets. A few Amazon reviewers reported that they received faulty products, or that they were sent the wrong product, but these don't really reflect on the item.

Reviews to Consider:
The highest rated review on Amazon by far states "So happy with this set after doing a lot of research and checking tons of reviews for other ones I’m glad I chose these super comfortable and soft you will not be disappointed."

Mellanni Bed Sheet Set- Brushed Microfiber 1800 Bedding

Best Microfiber Sheets

Microfiber is best known for retaining your body heat, so if you get cold easily cozying up in these sheets will keep you warm. The higher thread count here not only provides a soft sheet, but the extra fibers make them durable. For pickier consumers, or just ones who are wary of buying new bedding, the manufacturer offers a lifetime guarantee for a refund (although you might want to send them in before testing them too much).

Reviews to Consider:
The top review on Amazon was written in poetry form by a self-identified bored college student, so we're going to overlook that. One of the other top reviews reads "I have a hard time finding sheets I like. They tend to be too rough for me. Doesn't matter what the thread count... I saw these and all the positive reviews and gave them a shot.  Really soft, no scratching or rough feel. These sheets did not require several washes to soften and have held up well to washing. They seem like they may not last forever, and I have noticed a slight run after several months that could turn into a tear, but at the price, I feel like a shorter lifespan can be forgiven."

Boll & Branch Luxury Fair Trade Long Staple Organic Cotton Sheet Set

Best Organic Sheets

As stated, cotton is one of the most preferred fabrics for sheets, and even with a lower thread count of 300, these organic cotton sheets should become considerably soft while remaining lightweight. These sheets are organic and fair trade certified, so if you're particularly concerned with those aspects then these are a solid purchase.

However, it is important to note that the organic cotton sheets we looked at don't review as well as non-organic ones, either due to complaints of feeling rougher than normal, or due to complaints that they are much more expensive than comparable non-organic counterparts. All of the highest rated search results of "organic sheets" returned sheets that weren't actually certified organic. Boll & Branch is pretty well known for their advertising on podcasts and other internet programs, so it tends to have more reviews that its competitors--good and bad. Be aware that you're paying for the sheets' certifications.

Reviews to Consider:
The top reviews on Amazon are all negative on the price point or the initial roughness, although reviews from other sites are more positive. The highest rated (positive) review on Amazon reads "When the sheets arrived, I washed them per instructions and put them on her bed. She did say the sheets felt a little rough on her face. After a week, I pulled the sheets and washed them again. Now, after a second wash, the sheets are much softer and have a much better feel against her skin... I washed them in cold water and used a mild detergent. I expect they will get softer after another wash. The sheets are pricey. We'll see how long they last."

CGK Unlimited King Size Sheet Set - 4 Piece - Hotel Luxury Bed Sheets

Best Wrinkle Free Sheets

These are probably some of the most widely purchased sheets on the internet, with almost 30,000 Amazon reviews. Popular as they are (helped substantially by an affordable price point) the CGK Unlimited Microfiber sheets are pretty widely praised for their lightweight wrinkle free look and feel. The microfiber is breathable and the 1800 thread count makes them soft while maintaining good durability. Because none of the top reviews were negative, we decided to read what the 1-star reviews on Amazon had to say. It seems that most consumers who had a negative experience with these sheets discovered that their sheets rapidly damaged or shrunk during washing. This doesn't seem to be a common problem, but buyers can be aware that they may receive a defective product, which will likely reveal itself in the first couple washes.

Reviews to Consider:
The top review on Amazon reads "We are very pleased with these sheets, they are lightweight and not hot at all (big factor, and one micro fiber sheets usually fail at). They come out of the dryer wrinkle free and look nice on the bed - BUT they are made for a very deep mattress, if you have a thinner mattress they tend to bunch up making it messy looking and uncomfortable. I purchased this set to fit a hospital bed covered with a deep memory foam topper)."

ZIMASILK 4 Pcs 100% Mulberry Silk Bed Sheet Set

Best Silk Sheets

If you’re looking to treat yourself with luxurious sheets, silk is the way to go. It's smooth, soft, and is less likely to trap allergens than other common sheet fabrics. These sheets have a 600 thread count, making them silky smooth and very comfortable. Silk can trap body heat, so be prepared to stay warm throughout the night. A warning to any Canadian consumers; although all of the U.S. reviews on Amazon were positive, all three of the top international reviews (from Canada) reported that they did not receive the advertised sheets. If you live in Canada, you should be cautious when ordering them that you don't receive an unwanted product.

Reviews to Consider:
The top review on Amazon reads "Cool in the summer and just right for the winter. Purchased the pillow cases twice and a full set of sheets! Can’t get enough of the comfort and quality of the silk fabric. Looks especially beautiful in white. My preference of color because it looks exclusive!"

EASELAND Microfiber Bedding Set

Best Budget-Friendly Sheets

If you’re looking for sheets that won't hurt your budget, these sheets are a great choice. The polyester microfiber material will last over time while remaining stain and wrinkle resistant. The reviews were much more positive about their durability than for any other comparably priced sheets. Although, one Amazon reviewer noted that the elastic on their fitted sheet wore out. Since there weren't multiple complaints about this problem, we assume that this was a single defective item rather than a widespread design problem.

Reviews to Consider:
The top review on Amazon reads "I am very picky about sheets! I get the hot sweats on most all sheets, can not stand when our sheets knot up or do not stay pulled down around the mattress. I was VERY cautious ordering these, read everyones reviews on about oh 30 different sheet sets and decided to give these a try. These sheets have been washed and slept on nightly with ZERO complaints. If that changes I will let you know. So far yes yes i recommend!"

BAMPURE 100% Organic Bamboo Sheets

Best Bamboo Sheets

Bamboo sheets are breathable making them comfortable temperature-wise, especially if you are a hot sleeper. Bamboo is also a material that gets softer the more you wash it; these start off soft at a 300 thread count but will continue to soften over time. Not so much a commentary on the sheets as on the purchasing experience, a number of purchasers and reviewers reported that they received bamboo rayon sheets (instead of bamboo viscose sheets as advertised), or that they received polyester sheets. These don't seem to be common experiences, but more than one Amazon reviewer reported these product mishaps.

Reviews to Consider:
The top Amazon review reads "Prepare to be unimpressed and possibly even disappointed when you open the package- but have faith. At first touch they feel a bit like cheap satin. After some debate about returning them, we decided to wash them and give them a chance, hoping they would be as life changing as other reviews have said. After the first wash the texture changed significantly- more like a high thread count cotton sheet, very soft. We immediately felt better about our decision."

THXSILK Silk Sheet Set 4 Pcs

Best High-End Sheets

Coming in at a thread count of 400, these silk sheets are quite expensive, but are highly reviewed by consumers who want to spend the money. Silk is cool and smooth and excellent for your skin. If you suffer from allergies or sensitive skin, silk is an excellent fabric choice as it does not trap dust mites and allergens as easily as other fabrics such as polyester or cotton. The few negative reviews we found (which seemed to mostly focus on issues relating to all silk sheets) said that the smooth texture can make it difficult to make the bed, or might be too slippery for personal tastes.

Reviews to Consider:
One of the top reviews on Amazon reads "I've had these a few weeks and wanted to wait to review until I had more experience with them. They were a big splurge for me and with going through menopause I was willing to try anything to feel cooler and have better sleep... Quality is very good- sewn well, no hanging threads or defects whatsoever, luxurious feeling! I love the slate blue color, it is gorgeous and seems true to the pictures on computer. The sizing is generous on both the pillows and sheets. I have a 16 inch mattress with a topper and it fits with room to spare."

Linenspa 600 Thread Count Ultra Soft, Deep Pocket Cotton Blend Sheet Set

Best Polyester Sheets

Polyester is a synthetic fabric, which typically means that it will last longer than natural fibers such as cotton. These sheets are a blend of cotton and polyester giving you the best of both. The soft feel of cotton and the durability and wrinkle resistant benefits to polyester. Coming in at a reasonable price point these Linenspa 600 thread count sheets are a very practical option.

Reviews to Consider:
One of the top reviews on Amazon reads, "The sheets seem to be well made. The thread count is high enough so that the cloth feels smooth to the touch. The bottom sheet has deep pockets, and elastic all the way around. My only complaint is the deep pockets. I would have preferred pockets only deep enough to just fit the mattress corners - but, no one seems to make that kind any more. The description gives the correct pocket size - I just wish they made sheets with smaller pockets. I will definitely buy again."

Casper Sleep Soft and Durable Supima Cotton Sheet Set

Best Cooling Sheets

Coming in at a thread count of 400 these, Supima Cotton sheets are light, breathable and boast a lasting cooling effect. With a reasonable thread count, these sheets are soft without being too heavy, which makes them perfect for remaining cool. These are made of 100% cotton grown in California that gives you peace of mind knowing where materials were grown and harvested from. As a downside, these sheets are some of the more expensive ones on the list, and some reviewers commented that their sheets arrived smaller than advertised.

Reviews to Consider:
One of the top reviews on Amazon reads, "Grabbed the Twin sheets in white/grey. Purchased this colorway because it was less than half the price of the other colors. For ~$40, these sheets are top quality with extra long staple supima cotton... The sheets certainly wrinkle a lot after washing and drying, but this is expected for percale weave sheets. I also liked the video where they give some insight into the development of this sheet"
