    Perhaps the most devastating U.S. tornado outbreak of the 20th century, called the "Super Tornado Outbreak," took place April 3-4, 1974. It lasted 16 hours, produced a total of 148 tornadoes across 13 states (Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia), killed 330 people, injured over 5,000, and caused an estimated $600 million in damages.
