Doris Roberts had a career on stage and screen for six decades, but she was best known for her Emmy-winning role on the sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond (1996-2005, starring Ray Romano). Raised in New York City, she studied acting and began working professionally in the early 1950s. She made her Broadway debut in 1955, and was in several productions through the 1970s, including Last of the Red Hot Lovers (1969-71) and Bad Habits (1974). Throughout her career, Roberts appeared in dozens of television shows, often as a mom and usually in comedies. As Romano's meddlesome mother in Everybody Loves Raymond, she was nominated for seven Emmys and won four. In 1983 she won an Emmy for a dramatic role in an episode of St. Elsewhere. Her other roles include as the secretary in Remington Steele (1983-87, starring Pierce Brosnan), the mayor's wife in the movie The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974, starring Walter Matthau), a mom on Angie (1979-80), a mom on Alice (1981-82), a mom in the HBO series Dream On (1993-95), and a fairy in the TV movie A Mom for Christmas (1990).
