Winningham's feature film debut was in One-Trick Pony (1980), but her show business debut was on The Gong Show at the age of 17, where she won enough money to pay the fees for performing arts summer camp. Her other movies include St. Elmo's Fire (1985) and Georgia (1995), for which she was nominated for an Oscar and won an Independent Spirit Award, both for Best Supporting Actress. She won an Emmy for George Wallace (1997) and released a musical album titled What Might Be in 1991. She was in the short-lived TV series The Brotherhood of Poland, New Hampshire (2003) and Clubhouse (2004).
