Baze, Russell Avery

Baze, Russell Avery, 1958–, Canadian-American jockey, b. Vancouver, Canada. He rode primarily at tracks in N California. In 2006 he surpassed Laffit Pincay, Jr.'s record for career wins, and in 2008 reached the 10,000 win mark. He retired in 2016 with 12,842 wins, a record (now surpassed by Jorge Antonio Ricardo; still a North American record), and career earnings of nearly $200 million. He had 13 years in which he won 400 or more races, with a career high of 448 wins in 1995. Among his notable mounts were Eclipse Award winners Lost in the Fog and Shared Belief.
