Shmyhal, Denys Anatoliyovych

Shmyhal or Shmygal, Denys Anatoliyovych, 1975–, Ukrainian politician. An engineer and economist, he worked in the private sector (1995–2009), then served in the state administration for Lviv Oblast, becoming (2014) deputy head of the oblast's tax service. From 2015 to 2017 he headed a large Ukrainian supermarket chain, then held managerial posts (2017–19) in DTEK, an energy holding company. Returning to government, Shmyhal was governor of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast (2019–20), then deputy prime minister and minister of regional development (2020). After Prime Minister Honcharuk resigned in Mar., 2020, Shmyhal, regarded as a technocrat, was appointed his successor by President Zelenskiy.
