Plenković, Andrej

Plenković, Andrej, 1970–, Croatian political leader. He studied law then joined (1994) the Croatian ministry of foreign affairs in the department for European integration, heading the department from 1997 to 2001. He subsequently was deputy head of the Croation delegation to the European Union (2002–5), deputy ambassador to France (2005–10), and state secretary for European Union affairs (2010–11). After joining the Croation Democratic Union (HDZ) in 2011, he served in the Croatian parliament (2011–13, 2016–) and the European parliament (2013–16). In 2016 Plenković was elected HDZ leader; he became prime minister later that year when his party won a parliamentary plurality.
