Mirziyoyev, Shavkat Miromonovich

Mirziyoyev, Shavkat Miromonovich, 1957–, UZbek political leader, president of Uzbekistan (2016–). A graduate of the Tashkent Institute of Engineers, he taught there before becoming a deputy of the supreme council (1990). He he later served as governor of Jizzakh region (1996–2001) and of Samarkand region (2001–3), then as prime minister of Uzbekistan (2003–16). After the death of President Islam Karimov, Mirziyoyev was named acting president and then elected president, after a campaign in which he faced only token opposition.
