On March 22, forest fires broke out near the site of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. On 26 April, 1986 the reactor meltdown spread radioactive material across Europe. Officials have raised concerns that this fire could result in the spread of more radioactive material. As stated by the Ukrainian Parliament in a statement, “Probably the fire was caused by the armed aggression of the Russian Federation, namely the shelling or arson,” although there was no clear evidence to support the assumption. Authorities have stated that it would be a difficult task to extinguish the fire due to the presence of the Russian troops in the area, which is now under their control.
