Certain films suggest directions. They point outside themselves, indicating more or less clearly the type of movie that they wanted to be, or would have been if situations hadn't panned out as they did. Boiler Room is one such film.

It picks up (rather self-consciously) where Wall Street left off, strolls over to the territory of Glengarry Glenn Ross, then gets sidetracked on its way toward surpassing its antecedents. This time around, the cutthroat alpha males are young white guys reared on hip-hop and Hollywood who swindle shoddy stocks on unsuspecting customers. Seth (Giovanni Ribisi) is the newcomer, Abby (Nia Long) is his black love interest, and Jim (Ben Affleck) numbers among the Ferrarri-touting white-collar thugs who run the sham company.
